I just came across this in my Facebook application settings,

It would seem as though Facebook is launching a music service to compete with MySpace (should have much better usability!)

A quick search on Mashable tips it to be launched on 21st May.

Apple will release a tablet in January that will be awesome (and will dominate the tablet market).

Apple will continue to dominate with the iPhone for the rest of 2010 with a new release in July that will have a significant amount of new sensor capabilities.

Facebook will continue to lose market share to Twitter, and it will become evident that they came to the Geo-tagging/ public update party far too late, and will be their biggest strategic blunder. They will still be a long way ahead by the end of 2010, but the end of their dominance will be in sight.

Google will launch into several new verticals and integrate a very large amount of "universal search" onto Google maps. Maps will start to dominate more and more of the universal search homepage, making the paid search links, and paid links on maps much more valuable.

Android still will not have the killer hardware software combination together to rival Apple, but will be well on their way to having a viable competitive product, chipping away at Apple's main weakness, lack of openness.

An African nation will make it to the final four in the World Cup (This is a long shot, but I think this is the year). Italy will win. Australia will make it through the group stage… just (I feel this may be a bold prediction as well).

E-Commerce still won't be standard for large multi-channel retailers, but the leaders will be well on their way to nailing this proposition. They will be making massive leaps ahead of the competition, but will only be a small subset of all the majors (I won't name names but I have some in mind) . Market share will be regained from the online pure plays.

The first multi passenger commercial space flight on Spaceship One (or its equivalent will have happened or will be on the verge of happening).

Mobile Internet usage will have sky-rocketed from today and for many in Australia will be the dominant form of Internet usage. It will still be a long way from a majority of the population, but it will be a clear trend that will reach saturation within 5 years.

Sony Playstation will continue to make inroads on Wii, and will release a new Wii type controller, that will be better in pretty much all aspects. This will see a divergence in the market between catering for casual and hardcore gamers (if it hasn't already happened) and Nintendo will release a new console. This will break the 10 year cycle and set Nintendo on a new path exploring casual gaming.

3D televisions will be the hot property next Xmas, as well as tablets and iPhones. (Following the World Cup broadcast in 3D).

Kevin Rudd won't be significantly challenged by Abbot as their campaigns gear up toward the end of the year. Internet Censorship will still be on the Labor agenda, and not be receiving the coverage it deserves.

News corp will still not have worked out how to monetise news - the solution will still be structured data.

Fingers crossed, let's see how it turns out.

I love and hate the echo chamber, but Seth makes a great point.I’m still amazed by how quickly IT is pushing forward connect things together, and allowing me to make this post from my phone while watch Buzz on a PS3.2010 will be a year like last, where the exponential curve of change becomes even more pronounced and noticable as it flys by. Looking forward to that Apple announcement on the 26th to kick it off.Happy new year everybody!

A friend worried out loud to me the other day, “I spent the last seven months doing this [job] and I have nothing to show for it. If I had known I would have spent seven months and gotten nothing, you can bet I would have done something a lot more fun.”Ten years ago I wrote this post about the decade that ends today. The oughts (the “uh-ohs”?) were a tough decade on a macro level. Front page news events will give the textbooks plenty to write about in the years to come. But on a micro level, on a personal level, this was a decade filled with opportunity. The internet transformed our lives forever. Opportunities were created (and many were taken advantage of). And, like every decade, just about everyone missed it. Just about everyone hunkered down and did their job or did what they were told or did what they thought they were supposed to, and just about everyone got very little as a result.Maybe ten years is too long a period of time to plan for. So how about seven?Seven years from now, what will you have to show for what you’re doing right now?If your answer is, “not much,” perhaps you should consider a new plan, one that might generate a different answer, or, at the very least, be a more fun way to waste seven years.

Many sales people set their goal to make as much money as possible.

This is a fantastic goal for a salesman, and often it is perceived that to achieve this goal you must extract the largest amount of money from a customer per visit. However, in most cases, this isn’t the optimum path to making as much money as possible (which to some may seem counter intuitive). The way to optimise the amount of money you can make per customer is to provide them with the most value per visit. By providing value, you create the revenue stream that will ultimately flow back to the sales person creating it. By focusing purely on extracting as much money as possible per customer, you may be draining the water from the land such that nothing will grow there ever again.

Basically, we all know how genes, information represented in the structure of DNA, survive by becoming more and more adept at making sure they replicate. Meme’s are the equivalent cultural packets of information.

This information isn’t represented physically in structure like in DNA, but can be represented by strings of “1’s” and “0’s” which take on a myriad of physical forms as magnetic bits on a disk, connections of neurons or the state of a semi-conductor.These memes, in the desire to replicate, are under the same evolutionary constraints as genes. The only difference here is that marketers/ communicators are the architects of memes, and people are the carriers. By studying the architecture of successful memes and their replication strategies, marketers are able to have more success in communicating a message, and growing a brand.

There are many places to begin to be able to study how memes travel and how they replicate. Anything from religion to YouTube will do. This allows us to begin to be able to understand the common features of particularly virulent strains of memes. We can observe how “retweets” travel through networks on Twitter, or how attribution affects marketing campaigns via analytics and then we begin to be able to see patterns of how memes flow throughout society – which then allows us to theorise why.The memetic perspective isn’t good just for marketers, but can be great for understanding and managing your own memetic environment. I even think it could have profound effects for how we manage social issues like rehabilitation. Is it any wonder that when we put criminals in a poor memetic environment like a jail for a sustained period of time that we don’t end up with model citizens afterwards? Perhaps introducing other memes via the Internet would have some cultural impact within rehabilitation centres? There is a large amount of cultural good that could come from improving the memetic landscape in rehabilitation centres. But I digress; in a marketing sense, whenever you are buying display ads, tweeting, or running a search campaign, you have the opportunity to deliver a memetic payload. What cultural significance are you going to have to have your memes adopted?

Quite often we hear that people on social networks don’t pay any attention to ads, and the the social networks themselves haven’t worked out how to make advertising within them work. Possibly it is because they were never meant to work, after all, we are social creatures.

Chris Anderson recently published his book “Free! Why $0.00 is the future of business” , around which there was a fair bit of debate. (Malcom Gladwell vs Seth Godin). Whether you agree with Chris or not, the clear trend is that advertising costs are rapidly dropping, the amount of information people are consuming is dramatically increasing as is their ability to filter and control it.

So, is advertising losing its effectiveness?

Traditional advertising certainly is – and by traditional, I mean interruption marketing. If the information isn’t supposed to be there, then trust me, most people aren’t going to care about it (maybe 0.19% will). That isn’t a lot, so it is a good thing those CPM’s are getting cheaper.

There are other advertising vehicles like sponsorship, which still seems to be effective – congratulations Red Bull – due to the fact that they are spending their dollars to enable some other grand cultural pursuit. As a result the brand, with the culture, spreads.

Google is still not in the business of interruption marketing. Sure, we’d all rather be in the organic listings than the sponsored section, so it isn’t surprising that the SEO industry continues to grow, but there still seems to be a lot of room for good marketing in the sponsored search results.

Given that we know that word of mouth is the most powerful form of marketing, and social networks provide a way to supercharge this, it seems to me that it is now cost effective to be spending large amounts of time and money investing in the communities that follow a brand. Many brands (although not enough) have switched on to the fact that they need to engage, listen and have two way conversations with their customers, but I’m not sure many have made the switch to say “Maybe we should invest in the community, and spend the money internally to free up more resources to engage”.

We are in the middle of the financial crisis, so where is that money going to come from? Well, the advertising budget would seem to make sense. It is important to remember that this isn’t money for advertising in social networks, this is money purely for socialising – just like that money you used to have for a “corporate lunch”. It could be for creating new forums, providing more time from internal staff, investing in socialisation tools and platforms, or incentivising the community to create. Whatever it is used for, surely the return for each dollar would have to be better than most advertising models currently offered by traditional “ad supported” websites/ industries.

Above: Possibly the worst pop-up I have ever seen.
